What Are Islands
Happiness is so often thought to be a destination, and that people cannot decipher whether they've reached it leaves them miserable. But if happiness is only so many islands to visit, the concept makes a whole lot more sense. What is happiness, then?
- It is snow, lining each branch of every tree, on a silent, white night.
- It is new music from the speakers; heads bobbing along.
- It is kids walking out of their last day of school, backpacks held up as trophies.
- It is walking through a museum on a rainy day.
- It is the slow burn of a candle in a dark room against a background of stuttering, tapping keys.
- It is being greeted at the door.
- It is a hammock without bugs or humidity.
- It is three more points than the other team on a late Sunday afternoon, and the people surrounding exploding into cheers.
